GASMEMS is an European training
network for young researchers
in the field of rarefied Gas Flows in Micro Electro
Mechanical Systems
Gas flows in microsystems are of great interest for various applications that touch almost every industrial field. This diversity is typified through the following examples: fluidic microactuators for active control of aerodynamic flows, vacuum generators for extracting biological samples, mass flow and temperature micro-sensors, pressure gauges, micro heat-exchangers for the cooling of electronic components or for chemical applications, micropumps and microsystems for mixing or separation for local gas analysis, mass spectrometers, vacuum and dosing valves.
The main characteristic of gas microflows is their rarefaction, the level of which often requires a modelling both by continuous and molecular approaches. The role played by the interaction between the gas and the wall becomes essential and it is generally badly known. Numerous models of boundary conditions are currently in confrontation and require an empirical adjustment strongly dependent on the micro manufacturing techniques. On the other hand, the experimental data are fragmentary and difficult to confront. Most of them do not address heat transfer and gas mixtures issues.
The GASMEMS network has been built from several existing collaborations within bilateral programmes, from scientific collaborations and national networks. However, there was no global coordination of the research efforts in the field of gas microflows at the European level.
Thus, the two primary objectives of this ITN project are:
to structure research in Europe in the field of micro gas flows to improve global fundamental knowledge and enable technological applications to an industrial and commercial level;
to train ESR (Early Stage Researchers - PhD Researchers) and ER (Experienced Researchers - Post-doctoral Researchers) at a pan-European level, with the aim to providing both a global overview on problems linked to gas flow and heat transfer in microsystems, and advanced skills in specific domains of this research field.
Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Toulouse (INSA), University of Toulouse, FRANCE.

The network involves 13 main partners and 4 associated partners. All the research teams in the proposed network have been already involved in joint research in the past and their members have co-authored a large number of publications.

15 PhD (Early Stage Researchers – ESR) and 5 Post-doctoral (Experienced Researchers – ER) open positions:
Dynamics of gas microflows ( 5ESR and 2 ER), projects on:
Curvature effects, hybrid methods, analytical and numerical models at high Knudsen numbers and in transient or developing flows, flows of gas mixtures in microchannels, micro molecular tagging velocimetry and micro particle image velocimetry for gaseous microflows.
Heat transfer in gas microflows (6 ESR and 1 ER), projects on:
Heat transfer models for moderately and highly rarefied gaseous flows, hybrid methods, thermal creep effects, temperature measurements by micro-interferometry and temperature sensors.
Gas – materials interactions (4 ESR and 2 ER), projects on:
Simulation of gas/surface interaction and determination of energy accommodation coefficients, higher-order boundary conditions for early transition regime, influence of manufacturing techniques on gas microflows, composite materials for gas microflows, catalyst testing, gas selectivity using MEMS.
Individual career development plans, mobility, the requirement for every participant researcher to acquire a minimum knowledge in modelling and simulation, experimental techniques and MEMS manufacturing, in addition to their project specialisation, and Network annual Workshops and Summer Schools will ensure that each researcher receives exposure to, and benefits from, the full expertise of the Network.
The involvement of industrial partners ensures the commercial and industrial relevance of the proposed program. Coupled with the broad range of industrial application areas (process technology, micro cooling in electronics and chemistry, vacuum technology, biomedical, sensors industry etc.), researchers in the proposed program will face considerably improved career prospects in the various new and emergent applications of gas micro flows.
The Annual Gross Salary given in the detailed information files provided below is a gross Community contribution to the salary costs of the fellow. Consequently, the net salary results from deducting all compulsory social security contributions as well as direct taxes (e.g. income tax) from the gross amounts. Please note that social security contributions and taxation of the different allowances vary from country to country. In order to obtain an estimation of the actual net allowances for the researchers, it is recommended to consult the host institution.
The GASMEMS ITN endeavours to assure a fair female representation and therefore encourages women to apply.
